Gothic Supernatural

In the mid 1990s, I created several cut and paste collages as a free-lance illustrator/artist. Since 2022 I've gotten back into illustrating as retirement means more work on personal projects. In 2014, I used collage skills to illustrate my pop music blog http://scotbeat.wordpress.com and digitized some of my earlier work as a perspectus of my concepts at http://djdills.wordpress.com. As my interests include mythology and the supernatural, I've done several motifs that fit in the cateogory including those posted here. Your thoughtful feedback appreciated. cheers, David

Growing up seeing media images from magazines like LOOK, LIFE, Saturday Evening Post, and National Geographics, I developed a periodical clipping file as a dynamic visual language to communicate thoughts. Creating a visual concept takes a period of internalization but feel sense of chance and surprise choosing particular elements to express an idea. It evokes in me the wonderment of a child viewing a diverse social universe as I tell my stories... Times Passed collages

All Things will Die Clearly the blue river chimes in its flowing Under my eye; Warmly and broadly the south winds are blowing Over the sky. One after another the white clouds are fleeting; Every heart this May morning in joyance is beating Full merrily; Yet all things must die. The stream will cease to flow; The wind will cease to blow; The clouds will cease to fleet; The heart will cease to beat; For all things must die. All things must die. Spring will come never more. O, vanity! Death waits at the door. See! our friends are all forsaking The wine and the merrymaking. We are call’d–we must go. Laid low, very low, In the dark we must lie. The merry glees are still; The voice of the bird Shall no more be heard, Nor the wind on the hill. O, misery! Hark! death is calling While I speak to ye, The jaw is falling, The red cheek paling, The strong limbs failing; Ice with the warm blood mixing; The eyeballs fixing. Cats!

CATS! My first cat collage was created in 1993 just months after I started collaging for personal enjoyment and relaxation. The cats on trash cans reminded me of living near San Francisco where it was often overcast. My father didn't seem to like cats since alley cats hung out on our back fence and make a racket, fighting with others. I found something endearing about them although only growing up with a fish tank and small turtles. Most of those I've met were very welcoming and shared a connection. Although I've done several collages featuring a variety of various creatures besides humans, cats often appear in my Halloween illustrations, being that I am fond of cats besides loving Halloween celebrations. Here is a selection of cat themed collages. There were a couple other of early cat collages that were featured in my Halloween exhibit in San Francisco, but unfortunately were chewed up by mice in a storage unit... no accounting for taste (LOL)
