In modern times October/November continue to be a time to celebrate the mysteries of death besides mystical aspect of the natural world and supernatural happenings beyond explanation. It is also a time to celebrate the changing seasons of fall when nights grow longer in the northern hemsphere.
Although the roots of Halloween dates back to Scandenavian and Roman tradition, it is celebrated in various parts of western Europe, Great Britain, Mexico, the United States,Canada and around the world. Depending where you are in the world, Halloween is known as All halloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve. "Halloween traditions have spread worldwide and have become increasingly popular in Europe. Each country still remains unique and has its own way of celebrating life and death." In Ireland and Scotland, Samhain, The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain is the original Halloween. "So, for one night, the souls of the dead, spirits, and fairy folk could easily cross into the physical world. To disguise themselves from evil spirits, people would dress in costumes. Then, they’d go from house to house reciting poetry in exchange for food. The souls of dead ancestors were honored with feasts, and bonfires were lit to keep the darkness at bay. Jack-o’-lanterns were carved out of turnips to frighten evil spirits away. Some of these traditions, like costumes, jack-o’-lanterns and trick-or-treating, carried over into modern-day Halloween and are celebrated around the world. Cats!

CATS! My first cat collage was created in 1993 just months after I started collaging for personal enjoyment and relaxation. The cats on trash cans reminded me of living near San Francisco where it was often overcast. My father didn't seem to like cats since alley cats hung out on our back fence and make a racket, fighting with others. I found something endearing about them although only growing up with a fish tank and small turtles. Most of those I've met were very welcoming and shared a connection. Although I've done several collages featuring a variety of various creatures besides humans, cats often appear in my Halloween illustrations, being that I am fond of cats besides loving Halloween celebrations. Here is a selection of cat themed collages. There were a couple other of early cat collages that were featured in my Halloween exhibit in San Francisco, but unfortunately were chewed up by mice in a storage unit... no accounting for taste (LOL)

Early Collage Illustrations 1860s]

Paper and fabric collaging has been popular for centuries but not so with photo-collage. Until the 19th century as photography became more ubiquitious with various periodicals, collaging was left to cutting up drawings although quilting was more popular with folk artists. In the 1860s, collage of watercolor and albumen silver prints were available and used in illustrations during the Victorian age. The medium gained attention in the 1860s. It became more accepted in the art world during the dada and surreal movements of the 1930s and used as a form of illustration in books and magazines throughout the 20th century.
