Colour collages #davidjdills 2022-4

Growing up seeing media images from magazines like LOOK, LIFE, Saturday Evening Post, and National Geographics, I developed a periodical clipping file as a dynamic visual language to communicate thoughts. Creating a visual concept takes a period of internalization but feel sense of chance and surprise choosing particular elements to express an idea. It evokes in me the wonderment of a child viewing a diverse social universe as I tell my stories... After leaving Oregon for Scotland, I wasn't doing much with #photocollage until the last couple of years. I used the medium to illustrate my music history blog scotbeat.wordpress.com but really got more into it in the last two years after reorganizing my magazine clippings [circa 1930s-early 1970s]. Now post retired, I created simple collages when the mood strikes or want to communicate an idea besides other little projects. Here are some I like from 2022-2024. Notes: I work with both colour and bxw images and this represents a few colour collages. When I was selling "HempPrints" of my work in the '90s [San Francisco to Seattle], I had access to a high end Cannon copier which eliminated dark lines from paper thinkness and where images could have been glued better. I don't mind white lines which is caused when scissors are worn down a bit. I prefer a glue pen but generally use a glue stick and Fiskar scissors since they are comfortable and sharp. I scan collages on a small scanner that is very basic but can get rid of some annoying lines with a spot fix app. I like the results to be as close to the original collage as possible although play with color ocasionally.... Early Collage Illustrations 1860s]

Paper and fabric collaging has been popular for centuries but not so with photo-collage. Until the 19th century as photography became more ubiquitious with various periodicals, collaging was left to cutting up drawings although quilting was more popular with folk artists. In the 1860s, collage of watercolor and albumen silver prints were available and used in illustrations during the Victorian age. The medium gained attention in the 1860s. It became more accepted in the art world during the dada and surreal movements of the 1930s and used as a form of illustration in books and magazines throughout the 20th century. Gothic Supernatural

In the mid 1990s, I created several cut and paste collages as a free-lance illustrator/artist. Since 2022 I've gotten back into illustrating as retirement means more work on personal projects. In 2014, I used collage skills to illustrate my pop music blog http://scotbeat.wordpress.com and digitized some of my earlier work as a perspectus of my concepts at http://djdills.wordpress.com. As my interests include mythology and the supernatural, I've done several motifs that fit in the cateogory including those posted here.
